黄崖关长城 晚照黄崖

Great Wall at Huangyaguan runs on the ridge of mountains to the north of Ji County, Tianjin. Part of the cultural heritage of the world, it was initially built in Northern Qi Dynasty (550 - 577) and later renovated and lengthened in Sui Dynasty (581 - 618) and again during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). The ancient Great Wall of this section had a length of 42 kilometers (about 26 miles), but it suffered extensive damage throughout its long history. In 1987, it was repaired and began to receive tourists. It is regarded as an "Impregnable Pass" in Tianjin. This section is the longest restored section of the Great Wall with a length of 3,052 meters (about 3,337 yards). In 1990 it was named one of the top scenic places in a list of the ten most appealing sceneries to visit in Tianjin.

What to visit

The Great Wall at Huangyaguan comes out first in the ten most-visited sites in Tianjin. It is considered to be a miniature of the Great Wall. The entire section is built on an abrupt mountain ridge. Being endowed with both natural beauty and cultural interest, it has become famous as a natural beauty spot and a summer resort. The major scenic area is composed of Huangyaguan Pass and Taiping Mountain Stronghold.

Huangyaguan Pass

In 1984, the people of Tianjin spent three years repairing 3,308 yards of the main wall from Banlagang Mountain in the east to Wangmaoding Mountain in the west. They restored 20 terraces, the Huangyaguan Water Gate, and the Bagua Castle (the Eight Diagrams Castle). The defensive system of the wall is complete. Watch towers, frontier cities, drain holes, emplacements, barracks and other indispensable military facilities are arranged orderly along the wall. Besides, the stele forests of the Great Wall, Beiji Temple, the exhibition hall of famous couplets, the Great Wall Museum (the first museum along the Great Wall) and the Phoenix Fortress have been newly built within the area.

Taiping Mountain Stronghold

Six miles northwest of Huangyaguan Pass and built 437 yards to 547 yards above sea level, the stronghold is located in Xiaopingan Village. It controls the Chongshan Valley east of Huangyaguan Pass City. Qi Jiguang's stone statue and a tower were erected by twelve widows from this area.

Great Wall at Huangyaguan Museum

In the reparation during the 1980s, more tourist sites were built at the foot of the Great Wall at Huangyaguan in Bagua Village, including Great Wall at Huangyaguan Museum and the Stele Forest. Great Wall at Huangyaguan Museum is the first Great Wall museum in China. In the showroom, tourists can learn about the historical development of the Great Wall. Also, the arms and everyday ware of Qi Jiguang (a general in Ming Dynasty and also a national hero) and his soldiers are displayed.

Stele Forest

The Stele Forest is the biggest in northern China. Stele inscriptions show the calligraphy of Chairman Mao, some generals of New China and modern calligraphers.

Annual marathon race

Since 2000, Huangyaguan holds its annual marathon race. More than 1400 people from over 30 countries enthusiastically take part in this race every year. It greatly enhances the reputation of the Great Wall at Huangyaguan as an indispensable section of this national monument. Every year the Great Wall at Huangyaguan receives more and more tourists from all over the world.

Four features

The Great Wall at Huangyaguan possesses many features including strong, dangerous, beautiful and ancient.

Strong

With its walls and towers built on mountain ridge with an average altitude of 738 meters, the Huangyaguan is really overwhelming. To the east there is the cliff; and the west, crags. It winds its way across mountains like a dragon. Guarding a stronghold, it has been the north entrance of Jinxian.

Dangerous

On the mountains with peaks rising one higher than another, the Great wall jumps its way up and down as a linkage between the cliff and crags. Since the mountain is sloppy, the steps are very high. In some sections, it looks like that the wall is running straight up or down. When you look down, you will feel dizzy at the sight.

Beautiful

On Huangyaguan, you will be able to enjoy both mountain scenery and waterfalls and springs.

Ancient

With a history of over 1400 years, the ancient walls was first build in Beiqi, and reserved well until today. In Ming Dynasty, it was added with walls made of bricks.

How to get there
