At No.7 Xiangshan Road, Shanghai, stands a two-storey European-style building. It may not be that noticeable among the nearby high buildings and mansions but it has won deep reverence and admiration from visitors since it was opened to the public in 1988. It is the Former Residence of Sun Yat-sen (also named Sun Wen), the great forerunner of the Chinese democratic revolution, the founder of the Republic of China and the respected contributor to Chinese modern history.

Sun Yat-sen (also named Sun Wen), the great forerunner of the Chinese democratic revolution, the founder of the Republic of China and the respected contributor to Chinese modern history. Sun Yat-sen is often referred to as the father of modern China. He was instrumental in the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty in 1911 and served as provisional president of the Republic of China when it was founded in 1912. Until his death in 1925 he was a uniting figure in Chinese politics, and today hes a revered patriotic hero.

What had happend here

From 1918 to 1925, Mr. Sun Yat-sen and his wife, Mrs. Soong Ching Ling lived in the Former Residence, which was donated by some patriotic overseas Canadian Chinese, in support of the Chinese revolution. It was here that Mr. Sun accomplished his renowned masterpieces such as Doctrines of Sun Wen, Plans of China's Development, etc., made the plan of reforming the Three Principles of the People (Nationalism, Democracy and the People's Livelihood) and put forward the three cardinal policies (alliance with Soviet Russia, cooperation with the Communists and assistance to the workers' and peasants' movements). It was also here that he received the representatives of the Communist Party of China and promoted the first cooperation between the two major parties in Chinese modern history (the Nationalist Party and the Communist Party).

Former Residence - The Witness of History

The residence witnessed his enthusiasm and his contributions to the Chinese revolution during the last years of this great man. After his death in 1925, Mrs. Soong continued to live here until 1937 when the Japanese army occupied Shanghai. Eight years later, upon China winning the war, Mrs. Soong offered to provide her home as the permanent site to Mr. Sun's memory. In 1961, the Former Residence of Sun Yat-sen was listed as being one of the Key State-preserved Cultural Relic Units.

Place for sacrifice

The activities of Mr. Sun Yat-sen, especially those of the days when he lived in Shanghai, are also displayed in historical materials and pictures. On the anniversaries of Mr. Sun Yat-sen's birth (Nov. 12) and his death (Mar. 12), flowers are presented this great man with respect from the municipal government of Shanghai, the relatives of Mr. Sun, and people from all walks of life.

What to see

While walking through the house, one can recreate the life of the owners through every exhibited article, either the knives hanging over the fireplace, or the photos on the wall of the living-room, or the books lining the bookcases, or even a pair of glasses once used. The Former Residence of Sun Yat-sen has a Sitting-room, a Dining Room, a Study, a Bedroom, a Roofed Balcony, a Small Sitting-room, and an Exhibition Room.

Sitting-room

On Sitting-room walls are two photos of Sun Yat-sen. In the center of Dining Room are a round Cantonese-style mahogany dining table and eight round mahogany stools. Displayed on the mantelpiece is a sward presented, to its left is a saber Sun carried when he acted as Generalissimo of the Navy and the Army in Guangzhou. Placed on the desk in Study is Sun's stationery. On the walls hang maps of different sizes. In the bookcases in the study and the corridor are more than 5,000 books.

Bedroom

The bedroom is simply furnished with a double bed and a wardrobe. Above the mantelpiece hangs a photo of Sun Yat-sen and Song Ching Ling taken in Shanghai in 1922. Displayed in Small Sitting-room are a Zhongshan-style suit Sun Yat-sen once wore, a pair of glasses, the cooking utensils he used on the march and some medical instruments he used when he practiced medicine. Now the historical materials and pictures about Sun Yat-sen himself and his revolutionary activities are on display in Exhibition Room.

    The four seasons are easy to tell apart. The weather is pleasant, and the number of all kinds of products is large in Spring and Autumn.

    Every June and July is the mold rain season, so it is usually humid in hotel rooms. Umbrella is a necessary thing to bring with during the rainy weather.

    The coldest time is from late January to early February. Even though there is not much snow, warm clothes are still needed, because cold wind is always unendurable. Hotel rooms are equipped with air-conditions, so please stay warm in the room.

    It is usually super hot in July and August. Weather with higher than 35 C usually stays for about ten days, so that prevention from overheat is very necessary.
