Former Residence of Mao Zedong Overview & Map Weather Transportation Information
The Former Residence of Mao Zedong lies at the foot of the hills where has become a major tourist attraction visited by hundreds of people daily. On December 26, 1893, Chairman Mao was born in this house, a simple mud-brick farmhouse with 13 rooms. This is where he spent his childhood and youth, attending school and helping his father with his work. The rooms are furnished as they would have looked when Chairman Mao lived there and most of the utensils are the original.
What to visit
The former residence exhibits more than 500 relics, nearly 200 photos, 6 sculptures, 5 models, 37 diagrams, 10 oil printings, showing the great life of Chairman Mao.
The house
The house has a courtyard, sunny yellow, mud brick walls, a nicely thatched roof. It is found on a wooded hillside, above some lush paddy fields. There are 13 and one half rooms in the former residence, including one and half central room, a kitchen, a dining room, three family bedrooms and a guest room. Within the rooms are various personal effects of Mao and his parents, as well as photos from Mao's life. The central room was shared by two families - Mao's family and their neighbor. There is the kitchen, where Chairman Mao often helped his mother do housework when he was still a child. Leading from the kitchen was Chairman Mao's parent's bedroom. On the inner wall hang two photos of Chairman Mao's parents. It was in this room where Chairman Mao was born.
Other scenic spots
Besides the Former Residence of Mao Zedong, the Ancestral Temple of the Mao Family, now Chairmen Mao's Museum, Stone Steles covered with Mao's poems and a Revolutionary Martyr's Cemetery can be visited here.
Surrounding attractions
The Dishuidong Cave, about 3 kilometers northwest of the village, is a very popular destination, possibly because of the fact that Mao spent eleven days here in the early days of the Cultural Revolution Years (1966 - 1976), contemplating the unknown.
Even nicer however, is the ascent to Shaoshan Peak, the conical hill just to the northwest of the village. From the summit (reached on foot or by cable car), you will have some good views over the village and Hunanese countryside.
