Famen Temple is situated at Famen Town, ten kilometers north of Fufeng County, Shaanxi Province, China. It is a famous Buddhist temple and throughout its very long history is has been revered as a Buddhist holy site as it was built to house because a finger bone of Sakyamuni (the Buddha).

Famen Temple was built in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 A.D.). According to Buddhist scriptures in 272 BC King Ashoka of India presented relics of Buddha to different places in order to promote Buddhism. All of the places that were presented with relics were obliged to build pagodas to enshrine them; in total, 84,000 pagodas were built all over the world. There are 19 such pagodas in China, of which Famen Temple is the largest one. Its most prosperous period began during the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534), and reached a peak in the Sui and Tang dynasties (581-907), when it was designated as an imperial temple. Eight emperors of the Tang Dynasty participated in an elaborate ceremony to welcome the temporary transfer of the bone relics to the palace for worship, and awarded a large amount of treasure to the temple which was stored at its underground palace.

In Famen Temple stands a 13-storeyed pagoda which was rebuilt in 1987. In the course of cleaning up the pagoda's base an underground palace of the Tang Dynasty, which had been closed for one thousand years, was excavated. As well as much Tang dynasty treasures, the excavators also found the finger bone relic of the Buddha. The finger bone is one of only three extant relics of the real body of Sakyamuni in the world.

The general layout of the structures at Famen Temple still follow that of the early Tang Dynasty (628-907) and the pagoda retains the old style of the Ming Dynasty's brick towers. The main building of the temple is the Treasure Hall, where rare national cultural relics are exhibited.

The Famen Temple Museum houses most of the precious treasures from the Tang Dynasty removed from the underground palace, including gold and silverware, colored glaze ware, porcelain and silks.
