Goose Neck Park

On the crest of the city, with special plant species and a newly built tower (Liangjiang Pavilion) Eling Park provides the view of the entire city. It commands a panoramic view of the Yangtze River to its south, the Jialing River to its north, the city proper to its east and the Futuguan to its west.

Something needs to know

Eling Park, also known as "courteous park", was built in 1909 and was originally the home of Lee, and his son, a wealthy business.

During the war against Japan, Chiang Kai-shek and his wife lived here and some embassies were also established in the park.

After the liberation of Chongqing in 1949, the park became the headquarters of the Southwest Military Command.

In 1958, it was remodeled as a park and named Eling Park (Goose Neck Park), for its narrow and steep shape resembling a neck of a goose. It is an ideal place to enjoy views of the Yangtze River and Jialing River and the night views of Chongqing City.

Why called " Eling Park "

Built in the period 1909 to 1911, it used to be a villa of a wealthy merchant. AS the terrain is like the head of a goose, a Qing Dynasty imperial aide Zhao Xishu, who was a friend of the merchant, once inscribed two Chinese characters Eling (goose neck), which is now carved on a stone tablet.

Getting aqound

Inside the bonsai garden of the park, there are more than 100 varieties of rare potted plants and miniature landscapes. Not far from the garden is a man-made lake called Ronghu. The stone handrails on the bridge are uniquely carved in the form of a rope.

Nanyuan Garden in the park is densely shaded with trees such as camphor trees, ginkgo, pine trees, winter sweet, cassia trees and crape myrtle. With weird rockery under trees it has a flavor of pastoral life.

The newly-built tower Liangjiang Ting has eight storeys. Standing on the top, visitors can enjoy a bird's eye view of the city at daytime, and a magnificent view at night. The chrysanthemum show of the city, held in the park each year, displays hundreds of rare species of chrysanthemums.

  • Is Chongqing's weather very hot? What to notice?

    Chongqing is located in the transition area between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Middle-lower Yangtze Plain. Which is famous for its hot summers and it is known as one of 'the three furnace cities'. The other two are Nanjing and Wuhan. Bring light clothing such as T-shirts, shorts and sandals if you come in summer. Also, remember to bring your umbrella, sunglasses, and suntan lotion to avoid the heat of the 'burning furnace'. The best season to visit Chongqing is in spring, autumn and winter.


  • Could i get to know something about minority cultures in Chongqing?

    Chongqing is a multi-cultural city, with about 23 distinct minority cultures. The Tujia and the Miao are the largest two minorities in Chongqing and mainly inhabit the Qianjiang Development District and the Fuling District. Every January 3 to 15 of the lunar calendar, Tujia people hold grand activities of worship, praying and dancing. The Miao people express themselves through singing.

    The bike is the worst choice for people who understand the structure of the mountain city. First timers to Chongqing should be warned it is very easy to get lost. The bus system and monorail are advised as the best forms of transportation.

    The local "Tan Mu Jiang" (Carpenter Tan) carpentry shop is worth a visit for its fine wood artwares

    There are many bars in Chongqing, but most are underpopulated. Several branches of the Newcastle Arms offer the closest thing to proper beer, but be sure they get your beer from the pump and not the slop tray.

  • Mind this customs rule

    Customs rules require an accounting of all valuables including watches, jewellery, cameras and currency that you are taking in. A copy of this is surrendered on departure and anything missing may well be treated as imported and duty required accordingly. Therefore make sure you obtain a police report for any goods stolen during your stay.
    Recorded video-tapes must be declared and may be viewed by the Authorities on arrival.

Eling Park (Goose Neck Park) was built in 1909 as a private garden, and was originally the home of Lee Yaoting and his son, a rich businessman. It was called "courteous park" at that time.
