Grand Mercy Temple

The Dabeiyuan Temple is located on the Tianwei Road of Tianjin City, well-preserved and large-scale. As an important place of religion, the Dabeiyuan Temple embodies the profound Buddhism.

What to visit

Two parts

It is composed of two parts: the West Temple and the East Temple, covering an area of 10,600 square meters (about 2.62 acres).The former one was built in 1669 in the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911), while the East Temple called New Temple was built in 1940 by the monk Long Xian.

West Temple

The West Temple refers to the three great halls in the west yard. The construction of the old temple was start in the beginning of Qing Dynasty, and was renovated in the eighth ruling year of Kangxi Emperor in Qing Dynasty. It becomes an office for Cultural Relic Palace, Abbot Palace and Chinese Buddhism Association Tianjin Branch.

  • Cultural Relic Palace
    In the Cultural Relic Palace of the west temple, there many collections from every dynasty since Wei and Jin Period including hundreds of Buddha statues which are made of various materials from bronze, iron, stone to wood.

East Temple

And the main part of the Dabeiyuan Temple is a series of Buddhist Architecture in the East Temple - the Tianwangdian Temple, Dabeidian Temple and Grand Hall.

  • Grand Hall
    Among those, the Grand Hall lies in the center of the Temple, featuring hundreds of statues made in Chinese ancient times with bronze, iron, wood and stone. Demonstrating the care and the precision of the sculptors, the statues are exquisite and artistic. Included are statues of Sakyamuni, Kwan-yin of One Thousand Hands, Maitreya and the Eighteen Arhats of the Buddha. In addition, various tasty vegetarian foods are sold there.
  • Statue of Sakyamuni
    The statue of Sakyamuni was created in Ming Dynasty. The whole Sakyamuni Statue is 7 meters high, 6 tons weight, with 9,999 small Buddha carved on the lotus throne.

Image of Xuanzang Master

The temple was once famous for holding a skull relic of Xuanzang, however, the relic was presented to India in 1956 when it was taken to Nalanda - allegedly by the Dalai Lama - and presented to India. The relic is now in the Patna museum. And from then on, Dabeiyuan Temple takes the image of Xuanzang Master instead of the spirit bones for the worship of the Buddhist.

  • Recommended Time for a Visit: One hour
