重庆市人民大礼堂 精美奇巧的东方建筑

Located at Xuetian Wan, Renmin Road, Chongqing People's Assembly Hall catches the attention of every passerby. It is regarded as a symbolic construction, belonging to pseudo-classic architecture which was chosen as one of 43 classic architectures of China. Day or night, Chongqing People's Assembly Hall will impress you a lot. Such a beautiful scene should be included in your travel plan.

Who built it

In 1951, under the leadership of Marshal He Long, an auditorium was to be built at Chongqing to accommodate domestic and overseas guests. Completed in 1954, it was named into the Chongqing People's Assembly Hall in 1955.

Have a look

The hall is in the architectural style of the Ming (1368 - 1644) and the Qing Dynasties (1616 - 1911). At the first glance, the People's Assembly Hall looks like the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. It is spanned by greenish glazed tile dome supported by scarlet columns. The dome, its parapet railing and brim gleam under the sun. The building's pillars and other structural members are sculpted ornately. The entire assemblage is nestled round gorgeous lush trees complementing the building visual experience.

Covering a floor area of about 30 thousand square meters (7.4 acres), the building complex is a cluster of attached structures featuring Ming and Qing architecture styles. The main body of the hall resembles the Imperial Vault of Heaven, a main part of the Temple of Heaven, which imparts a sense of solemnity and splendor. The great auditorium inside the hall is 55 meters high with a capacity of about 4,200 seats.

Renmin Square

In front of the People's Assembly Hall is the granite-paved Renmin Square. At the Hall's two wings buildings and towers are symmetrically attached six stages of stairs in the doorway lead to a vast Renmin Square featuring green lawns and huge fountains. As the square is the recreational place of locals, you will see groups of seniors or rehearsing, dancers or youths playing and competing. It is also where some public activities are carried out. The colorful neon lights at night also make the hall and square a visual experience.

Night scenery

Another way to experience to the hall is to visit it in the early evening when nearby Chongqing People's Square, in front of the hall, is bustling and thriving. The square is a relaxing casual attraction with a musical fountain and evergreen meadow. The hall roof is adorned with multicolor neon lights providing splendid night photo opportunities.

  • Is Chongqing's weather very hot? What to notice?

Chongqing is located in the transition area between the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Middle-lower Yangtze Plain. Which is famous for its hot summers and it is known as one of 'the three furnace cities'. The other two are Nanjing and Wuhan. Bring light clothing such as T-shirts, shorts and sandals if you come in summer. Also, remember to bring your umbrella, sunglasses, and suntan lotion to avoid the heat of the 'burning furnace'. The best season to visit Chongqing is in spring, autumn and winter.

  • Could i get to know something about minority cultures in Chongqing?

Chongqing is a multi-cultural city, with about 23 distinct minority cultures. The Tujia and the Miao are the largest two minorities in Chongqing and mainly inhabit the Qianjiang Development District and the Fuling District. Every January 3 to 15 of the lunar calendar, Tujia people hold grand activities of worship, praying and dancing. The Miao people express themselves through singing.

  • Can i tour around Chonqing by bike?

The bike is the worst choice for people who understand the structure of the mountain city. First timers to Chongqing should be warned it is very easy to get lost. The bus system and monorail are advised as the best forms of transportation.

  • What sourvenirs should I buy and where?

The local "Tan Mu Jiang" (Carpenter Tan) carpentry shop is worth a visit for its fine wood artwares

  • Notice this if you tend to drink beer in a bar

There are many bars in Chongqing, but most are underpopulated. Several branches of the Newcastle Arms offer the closest thing to proper beer, but be sure they get your beer from the pump and not the slop tray.
