Yili Temple,Jin Ding Temple

Located at the Chengde Summer Resort Manor in Chengde City, Hebei Province, Anyuan Temple was built when Emperor Qianlong put down Zhunge'er's rebellion in Xinjiang in Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911). It also has the names "Ili Temple" or "Jin Ding Temple." The temple has the width of approximately 146 meters, length of approximately 255 meters and occupying a land area of 2.8 hectares and the entire temple is in rectangle shape and faces south and situated more to the west.

Why built the temple

Constructed in 1764, Anyuan Temple, an imitation of Ili Temple in Xinjiang is situated due east of the Mountain Resort. Previously in 1759, more than 6,000 people of the Dashidawa clan of the Junggar tribe in Xinjiang migrated to the former Rehe Province (Chengde being its capital before its abolition as a province after 1949). Because their Gu'erzha Temple on the northern bank of the Ili River in Xinjiang has been destroyed during a war, Qing emperor Qianlong had a similar temple built in Chengde for their worship, naming it An Yuan Miao (Temple for Distant Security).

Structures of the temple

There are three wall entrances inside and outside. The front part of the garden is open and the rear compact. The outer layer frontage wall and on both sides were set with three root star gate, the center of the binary wall is the entrance, with extravagant three pillars in front of the hall, Chinese style double-eave roof on the summit, three arched entrances and in brick masonry structure. The woodcarving in the temple is listed under the national level protection cultural relic of the country.

The main hall-Pudu

The main hall of the Anyuan Temple named Pudu, with black glazed tiles covering its roof, has a double-eaved roof and three stories. A Dumu statue resides on an altar in the hall and the four walls are covered in Buddhist stories. The hall has 64 principal columns to form a winding corridor in front of which is erected a stone tablet made at Emperor Qianlong's request. Inscriptions on the tablets are written in Manchu, Han, Mongolian, and Tibetan characters, recording the historical facts of Zhunga'er's rebellion.

One of the famous Eight Outer Temples of Chengde, Anyuan Temple (Temple for Distant Security) is an imitation of Ili Temple in Xinjiang. Its roofs are covered with black glazed tiles. Serving as a foil to green mountains, blue sky and white clouds, the temple looks more magnificent and solemn with religious atmosphere.
