The 108 Dagobas are located on the east slope of Xiakou Mountain on the west banks of the Yellow River in Qingtongxia City, the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Although the exact year of construction of the group of Dagobas is unknown, some believe they were built during the Yuan Dynasty (1271 - 1368).

Admire the group of Dagobas

Leaning on mountains close to the waterside, the Dagobas are located on a precipitous slope sitting in the west and facing east. They are scatter following the curve of the mountains in an odd order in 12 rows to form an equilateral triangle, and the top one is the largest one, others diminish in size, layer by layer. From a distance, a full view of the entire group of Dagobas can be achieved. Such a group of Dagobas is unique in terms of Chinese architecture.

They have three different shapes (pyramid, gourd, and vase), which range in height from 3.5 to 2.5 meters. Such a group of Dagobas is unique scenery by Yellow River. All 108 Dagobas were erected on an octagonal Sumeru base with a solid, overturned bowl shape. They are covered with lime with a pearl-shaped top, resembling that of the white pagoda of the Yuan Dynasty at the Beijing Miaoying Temple.

The meaning of "108"

Buddhism believes that there are 108 kinds of worries in people's life so that a devout Buddhist is to wear a rosary with 108 beads and say prayers 108 times to stave off such unlucky occurrences. This kind of idea is obviously displayed in 108 Dagobas. It is said that counting a dagoba is removing a worry and counting all dagobas in one breath can get rid of all worries, which leads most tourists to count dagobas here.
